The opportunity for a versatile lighting upgrade came when Pekka Heng and Elina Ostamo undertook a major renovation of their house. “Lighting has a big impact on the look and use of spaces, so we wanted to upgrade the lighting to be as functional and versatile as possible. The idea was to use a lot of LED tape. We wanted both indirect light and spotlighting in the rooms,” he says of the need for a lighting upgrade. “We upgraded the bathroom into a stylish spa area, and as part of the upstairs renovation we replaced the lighting in the bedroom and study with LED strip lighting. The open-plan living room-kitchen on the middle floor was brightened up with good quality LED spotlights.”

Lots of atmospheric LED strip lighting in the bathroom

The bathroom, converted into a luxurious spa, was completely renovated. For the wall surfaces in the shower area, black-grey, brown-brown, matt-finished Tile Point LPC Rust Brick was chosen and installed using a herringbone screed. The light was intended to highlight the shades of the wall, so the strip strip was mounted on an aluminium profile that was embedded in the ceiling, close to the wall. The profile was cut to size and the LED strip chosen was a colour temperature adjustable, laterally bendable Tunnelma CCT 14,4 W/m strip, which was also applied to the top of the shampoo shelf. A laterally bendable LED strip was used to make the light beam from the corner continue steadily after the corner.

Suitable jigs were cut from the aluminium profile of the periphery, and a laterally bendable LED strip was installed all the way around. This made the corner look spectacular.

Adjustable from cool white at around 6500 Kelvin to warm white at around 2500 Kelvin, the LED strip brings out the different tones of the bathroom tile material beautifully. With sliding light temperature control, a lot can be done to influence the mood of a room. The light must also be dimmable.

For the wall of the dressing room, Siparila K4 was chosen in a shiny grey wood panel with a green tint. An embedded LED strip in the ceiling also wraps around this wall and continues around the corner, illuminating the toilet space. In the same way, the Led strip was also installed on two walls in the changing room.

Next to the wall, an LED strip circles the room, providing beautiful and even light.

“The colour temperature adjustable strip strip was a good choice, as the different tones of the wall surfaces are accentuated depending on the shade of white light you put on the LED strip. Lighting has a surprisingly big impact on the atmosphere of a space. The colour temperature and dimming controls are wireless, so they were easy to install and saved us time and effort in cabling and plumbing,” says Heng.

In the fireplace, a Helmeile 7.2 W/m warm-tone dimmable LED strip was used in an aluminium profile under the table and behind the backrest. Placing them under the benches and behind the backrest is a good way to make the lighting glare-free. In addition, the LED strip was placed quite low to prevent it from heating up too much. The atmospheric lighting is further enhanced by Harvia’s illuminated installation collar.

The ceiling of the spa area was designed for a higher light demand, e.g. dimmable and colour temperature adjustable Led downlight for cleaning in a dedicated lighting group – Round R023 black frame 9W spots. In spotlights, the light comes slightly inwards from the roof level, so there is less side glare.

The wireless light controllers were easy to install because they do not require wiring to the wall. Three groups in the bathroom provide a suitable variation in the use of lights.

Bedroom Led strip – atmospheric and transformative lighting

In the course of the renovation, the bedroom was given new surfaces, and a light socket was built on two walls for indirect lighting. An elegant coffered ceiling solution was installed on the ceiling surface, through which an LED light rail illuminates the room evenly and pleasantly. The aluminium profile chosen was a surface-mounted 45-degree angle profile, which cools the LED strip and plays an important role in protecting the LED strip from dust. The width of the lip was 20 cm and the distance from the ceiling is about 15 cm. The dimensions of the strip and the installation point will affect the way the light opens naturally into the room through the ceiling.

In the bedroom, a light trap was built with a 45-degree angled strip of colour-temperature adjustable LEDs installed at the back edge.

“When considering the amount of light, we decided that with a strong enough LED strip, no other light was needed on the ceiling. The reading lights add the right amount of light to the room. The bedroom has 7 metres of Tunnelma CCT 14.4 W/m colour temperature adjustable LED strip, from which we can choose a white shade to match the interior. The ribbon is also dimmable, so the amount of light can be adjusted to the desired level. It was very good that we got personal help from LedStore in choosing the lights. We wanted to design our lighting well,” Pekka says of the design project.

For a small bedroom, you don’t need any light other than reading lights.

Good general lighting in the study, high quality light in the living kitchen

The general lighting chosen for the study was Led – Round 033 9W spots. The lights were placed symmetrically in a 13m2 space, emphasising the workstation. Part of the room is a low space. Directional spots were chosen for the ceiling, which, in addition to dimming, provides a suitable addition for adjusting the lights. The lights have a wide opening angle, making them ideal for general lighting, and there are no dark corners, even when spotlights are directed. The roof is made of Siparila white structural panels.

In the study, 9W spotlights provide sufficiently uniform and efficient general lighting.

“We also chose colour temperature controlled spots for the office, as we wanted to experience the effect of changing the colour temperature of the light on our working philosophy,” Pekka says.

In the other rooms, the lights positions were already in place, so they were replaced with high colour rendering index LED spotlights.

In the living room, attention is drawn to the impressive fireplace. The role of lighting is to provide adequate and high-quality general lighting.

“We have been satisfied with the quality of the products and service. LedStore has a wide range of expertise in both the design and the customization of LED strips. For example, we made LED strips in the desired lengths and the appropriate lengths of connecting wires to the ends of the LEDs, pre-punched. This also contributed to the ease of installation on site, which was as expected. There are a lot of options in LED and LedStore was a great help in winning the LED jungle,” says Pekka.
