Interior designer Riikka Patrikainen / Design Mood Oy, planned and managed a tight project from start to finish, when the apartment in Pikku-Huopalahti was renovated according to the clients’ wishes. The renovation started at the end of the year and in May the residents were able to move in. In this article, we present the end result of a unique site and explain the choices made.

“It took about six months to completely demolish the apartment to concrete and rebuild the interior. Among other things, the bedrooms were rearranged. The wall between the kitchen and the living room was also demolished, opening up the space considerably. The hallway was shortened to make the living room more spacious,” Riikka describes the scope of the project.

According to the customer’s wishes and your own professionalism

The client wanted a luxurious and spectacular home with contrasts, not over-smoothing. Riikka was able to use a lot of creativity and finished the project in style. Lighting design was also an important part of the project:

“The lighting was used to give the space a sense of spectacle and to emphasise the shapes of the space. On the other hand, indirect LED strip solutions also helped to create a harmonious whole and to bring the spaces together in an atmospheric way,” Riikka describes the role of lighting in the whole.

As a single lighting element, he found that the most successful was the use of Linja5 spotlights in front of the curtains. A narrow-angle spotlight on the living room wall illuminates the curtains just right, with no side glare.

Lighting solutions according to the premises

Riikka describes the role of lighting and the solutions adopted in this way:

“The floor plan of the space is complex, so we used linear lighting to give clarity to the whole. As an important element, the circular sofa softens the corners of the space and brings the living room together. The overall execution is clean and simple but interesting”.

Living room-kitchen interior lighting solutions and light usability

Led Store Oy was involved in the project as a commentator on Riika’s lighting plan, as an assistant in product selection and as a supplier of fixed lights, i.e. flush-mounted and LED strip lights. LedStore’s Janne Halttu considers the lighting at the site to be very successful:

“The open-plan renovation of the living room-kitchen space is multi-faceted, with a downward slope from the kitchen, providing a natural accent lighting between the kitchen and living room.

The kitchen’s stunning focal point is a dark Dekton tile, with gold-toned details given extra sparkle by an LED strip that illuminates the wall directly from above. This LED strip features colour temperature control, meaning that the Kelvin of white light can be easily adjusted from warm white to cool daylight.

The linear LED strip lighting designed by Riika in the wide flush-mounted profile provides even light to the work area, and is also an elegant element that accentuates the shape of the kitchen,” says Janne.

The interior designer has designed mostly indirect LED strip lighting for the living room, both in the lowered ceiling lip and behind the TV wall, directed from top to bottom.

“Backlighting a TV not only creates a calm atmosphere, but also smoothes out the bright contrasts on the set, which is more pleasing to the eye,” Janne says of the role of backlighting in the living room.

Particular attention was also paid to the ease of use of the lights, in order to make colour temperature control and dimming as smooth as possible.

“If it’s difficult to operate and adjust the lights, it’s not done at all. That’s why we paid attention to ensuring that there are enough light switches, for example, and that they are easy to use. In this project, wireless wall buttons and mobile lighting control were introduced, allowing the customer to control the lights both from the wall and from their mobile devices.

The control works in full sync between the controllers and always remembers the previous settings. This is useful, for example, when the power comes back on after a power cut, so the lights don’t all flicker on, but the controls remember that the lights were off before the power cut, so they will be off when the power comes back on,” Janne says.

Entrance hall and bathroom lighting solutions, colour temperature adjustability ensures consistency

In the hallway, a colour temperature adjustable LED strip light recessed in a wide aluminium profile provides linear and adaptable lighting.

“In the hallway and bathroom, as in the other rooms, we have chosen colour temperature controlled lighting. The adjustability allows for a perfect match between the materials and colours designed. The materials and colour tones are always slightly different in the catalogue and in the final product, and the surrounding materials will have an impact on the overall effect. This is why adjusting the colour temperature of white light in the lighting to the right shade allows the materials and interior tones to match,” Janne explains the benefits of colour temperature adjustability.

He also praises the lighting solutions in the bathroom:

“Interior designer Riikka has chosen a pendant light for the bathroom’s utility corner, which adds a luxurious cosiness. In the utility corner, LED strip lighting has also been used to provide a uniform light on a level that can easily become dim, making it easier to work. Due to the limited window area in the bathroom, special attention has been paid to lighting. The room is a natural combination of dimmable spotlighting and indirect LED strip lighting to provide just the right amount of light for different situations.”

“LedStore was also chosen as the lighting partner for this project, as the products are of high quality in terms of both materials and light quality. In addition, LedStore provides me with background support for the selection of lighting and control solutions. I get a lot of positive feedback from my customers,” says Riikka.
